The Politicization of Migration

In a previous article, we addressed the marked increase in crime throughout Europe during the migrant migration which began in 2015. While these statistics are concerning indeed, these migrants have also been used by political opponents to further political ambitions.

Islamist political leaders no doubt have their own political agenda regarding the move of millions of Muslim migrants into Western democracies.

As we saw in a previous article, many migrants/asylum seekers also have their own agenda in this migration, whether it is the propagation of Islam, which they have been very candid about, or escape from the law.

Helping migrants and asylum seekers has traditionally been a human rights issue. Protecting the helpless, giving shelter to the persecuted was considered our duty as Judeo/Christian democracies.

Isaiah 1:17

Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.

Within the last decade, immigration has become decidedly political in our Western world. Both in Canada and the United States, key election platforms have been focused on the issue of opening our doors to asylum seekers.

Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government, during their 2015 campaign, promised to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees, a move that was applauded by the Muslim community, and no doubt boosted the vote within this community. As of October 2020, 44,620 Syrian refugees have arrived in Canada, the majority being government sponsored.  With an election possible in the fall, the Liberal government has once again politicized asylum seekers by promising to resettle Afghans who assisted Canada.

The 2020 election in the United States was largely focused on their southern border, with much resistance by the opposition regarding the wall  that President Trump had started to build to control the influx of illegals and the  travel ban from Islamist countries. President Biden rigorously campaigned against the above in an attempt to capture votes. Many have since begun to see the folly of such campaign promises from the Biden camp.

In Europe, elections have been won and lost over the migrant crisis which began in 2015 and continues on a lesser scale until the present day.

Migrants are regularly used as pawns in the political arena.

During the Tokyo Olympic games, Krystsina Tsimanouskaya, a Belarusian athlete was given asylum by Poland after she refused to return to Belarus.

This past weekend, Polish border guards detained more that three hundred migrants at the Belarus border, most of them from Iraq and Afghanistan.  Authorities in  Poland and Lithuania have accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of using migrants to put pressure on the EU to reverse sanctions on the country or to hit back at Poland for giving refuge to Ms Tsimanouskaya.

“The Polish Border Guard said in a statement on Monday it had detained 349 illegal migrants crossing the Belarus border since Friday. It said the migrants were probably from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Border Guard spokeswoman Anna Michalska said the numbers of migrants detained since Friday were a record.

The largest group of 85 people was detained by officers from the Kuznica station on Saturday, according to the statement.

This year the Podlasie Branch of the Border Guard, which works on the border with Belarus, has detained 871 illegal immigrants.

In 2020 the Border Guard detained 122 illegal migrants crossing the Belarusian border.”

The ability to simply do good with no political reward seems to have largely disappeared.
