Documentation of Islamism in Canada

Over the last 5 years, Pegida Canada has, with their associates and partners, investigated Islamist activity in Canada.

Last month, we sent a document to Premier Ford. We sent the same document to MPP (former Premier) Kathleen Wynne.

The document outlines areas of concern, not only with individuals, but organizations that have voiced Islamist ideas. The impetus for this document was allegations against Canada Christian College by Muslim human rights group National Council of Canadian Muslims.

Pegida Canada is deeply concerned by NCCM’s decision to petition Ontario Premier Ford against the Canada Christian College and founder Charles McVety. Their reasoning is that Mr McVety has expressed Islamophobic and anti-LGBTQ views inconsistent with the Ontario Canadian Human Rights Code. NCCM called McVety a person “who has entrenched his reputation as a bigot.”

Here is an excerpt from NCCM’s statement^[1]:

“In 2010 Christian broadcaster Christian Television Service [CTS] removed McVety’s show, Word TV, after Canada’s broadcast industry watchdog ruled that various statements by McVety violated its broadcast codes. A complainant to Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) identified fourteen programs between July 19, 2009 and February 21, 2010 that disparagingly treated topics around Muslims and other minority groups. McVety also has reportedly stated, “Islam is not just a religion, it’s a political and cultural system as well and we know that Christians and Jews and Hindus don’t have the same mandate for a hostile takeover… we ask that Premier Ford distance himself from an individual who has entrenched his reputation as a bigot.”

NCCM alleges – McVety is a “bigot” because of his anti-LGBTQ position

The statement issued by NCCM refers to CTS decision in 2020 to remove McVety’s show following controversial statements on LGBTQ that among other things portrayed the gay pride parade as a “sex parade” and suggested that the new Ontario sexual education curriculum could turn some school kids into homosexuals.

NCCM’s Mustafa Farooq himself expressed anti-LGBTQ position

Mustafa Farooq, who called McVety a “bigot” because of his anti-LGBTQ statements, opposed^[2] alliances between Muslims and LGBTQ people comparing them to those who commit major sins such as adulterers, producers of alcohol and businessmen charging interest.

Mr. Farooq also expressed an offensive statement concerning Christian preachers in a Facebook post June 5, 2020 at 3:57 PM in which he stated “As a bunch of awful people showed up in Ottawa to scream about the redemption of Christ and All Lives Matter, I couldn’t help but think about the quote from brother Malcolm [X], “We didn’t land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on us.”^{^[3]}

Muslim imams, community leaders and groups voice anti-LGBTQ positions

Moreover, the Muslim religious leader in Canada repeatedly voiced radical anti-LGBTQ positions. Here are a few glaring examples:

Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips, a Canadian Muslim scholar and Imam:

“The Islamic Law says that if you’re caught in an act in an Islamic State you will be executed. If you’re been seen by four witnesses etc. execution. That’s the law.”
“It becomes a problem. Delaying marriage… Once we delay it [marriage] brings in [moral] corruption. Worse than that, you end up with lesbianism, homosexuality gets born out of those circumstances.”
“I saw the unthinkable. I came across young Muslims who are openly gay and proud of it. Atheists. In high school. And while I was there they passed a bill, bill 13, which allowed the government schools to teach homosexuality in kindergarten. In kindergarten! You may be wondering how can you teach homosexuality in kindergarten. They had the books ready. The homosexuals had already prepared a whole library of books promoting homosexuality. Among the most famous books is my two dads. Tommy has a dad and a mom but Johnny has two dads, and Johnny’s two dads take him everywhere to the park, to the beach, to the playground. Wonderful life with Johnny’s two dads. That’s the message. Having two dads is great. I seek refuge in Allah. So imagine, imagine a society where children are being taught homosexuality from kindergarten. By the time they reach grade three and four the teachers are bringing anatomically correct dolls into the classroom. Two male dolls and showing them how. What do you think? Where is that society headed? Is that where you want to be? Is that where you want your children to be raised?”^[4]

Wael Shihab, Imam of the mosque Masjid Toronto, affiliated with the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC):

“Homosexuality is a sinful act in Islam… we should not associate with them and should not take them as friends… In Islam, changing one’s sex is not permissible if the person (male or female) has ‎complete male or female sex organs… Given the above, it’s my advice for him to return back to his original sex and go through professional counseling and treatment to lead normal happy life. Islam has a clear stand on this issue, as it emphatically forbids homosexuality and lesbianism and regards them as a violation of the commands of Allah. It states clearly that same-sex marriage poses a serious and dangerous threat to human societies and communities… the Islamic concept of marriage is totally different from “gay or lesbian” styles of marital relationships… Same-sex marriage endangers true faithful family atmosphere where children should be soundly and morally raised. Gay and lesbian marital relationships lack social acceptance and impose serious dangers to the family institution. Same-sex marriage, moreover, threatens the existence of human species. Such relationships could not build human communities or secure the existence of humans… same-sex marriage imposes serious social dangers that destroy the basic foundations of families, societies, and human communities… Same-sex marriage, on the other hand, imposes serious dangers to the family institution, lacks social support, endangers the real lovely family life, and breaks the social order of the human community.”^[5]

Yusuf Badat, main Imam and ‘Director of Religious Affairs’ at the Islamic Foundation of Toronto:

“People who identify as transgender or transsexual are usually people who are born with typical male or female anatomies but feel as though they have been born into the ‘wrong body’. These individuals can gain mental treatment and guidance through counselling and therapy… It is prohibited to have a sex reassignment surgery in Islam.”

Abdullah Hakim Quick, Director at the Canadian Council of Imams:

“So he said: what is the position of Islam on homosexuality? They ask me. So newspaper, right? So I said: put my name in the paper. The position is death. And we cannot change Islam… It [homosexuality] goes with Zionism. And really it seems like, Allah knows best, if they are Dajjal’s (Antichrist) army while it is mostly Jews but probably there will be homosexuals with them too.”

Shabir Ally, the President of the Islamic Information & Dawah Centre International in Toronto:

“But God’s law says that what we’re talking about here [homosexuality] is wrong, and if they do that wrong they have to face it. So some say: no but we cannot help it. How do you mean you cannot help it? This is the continual call of the Satan. Satan tells the child molester you cannot help yourself you have to molest children. You see the short criminal mind? It is shown here the criminal mind. Some people have some criminal mind they cannot help themselves, they have to go murder the next victim, and the next victim, and the next victim. So this is they cannot help themselves. What do we say? You should be able to help yourself. Stop yourself. Right? Go to the guidance of Allah, glorified and exalted be He, do what is right. Just because you have an inner desire you have to commit crime doesn’t mean that you have to commit crime. You can stop yourself, right? Some people have some criminal mind they cannot help themselves, they have to go murder the next victim, and the next victim, and the next victim. So this is they cannot help themselves. What do we say? You should be able to help yourself. Stop yourself. Right? Go to the guidance of Allah, glorified and exalted be He, do what is right. Just because you have an inner desire you have to commit crime doesn’t mean that you have to commit crime. You can stop yourself, right?”

Imam Syed B. Soharwardy, the founder of Muslims Against Terrorism (MAT) and the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada (ISCC):

“According to the teachings of Islam homosexual behaviour is an abnormal behaviour and must be cured. Homosexuality is completely forbidden in Islam and it is one of the KABA-IR (big) sins according to Islam.”

Hacene Chebbani, The director of religious programming at the Islamic Information Society of Calgary:

“Allah, Exalted and Glorified be He, will not create something, humans in a certain way, and then punish them for something that He himself, it is impossible. This is not the justice (عدالة) of Allah, Exalted and Glorified be He. But anyway, between them there is a great controversy that the media, the filthy media is trying to promote this subject… Now here [in the Quran] Allah, Exalted and Glorified be He, is saying in this verse [أية] Say O Mohammad [قل يا محمد] Allah has made, has forbidden all extreme immoralities [فواحش], all extreme immoralities, and this [homosexuality] is included. This is one of the immoralities… This is what happening now. Good was turned, what is good was turned into a evil [منكر], evil and what is evil became something good, something popular and a trend. The people are proud, are proud to publicly say: I am so and so, I am so and so. In Europe we have four prime ministers, or five ministers who publicly declared that they are gays and lesbians. In Europe. Nowadays. The last decade, ten years or less. This is something new. So the one who refuses to accept their evil sins becomes the one who is intolerant, intolerant, a bigot, uncivilized… They want us to keep quiet, not to talk about it, not to say [anything against it]. They have the right to express their views and promote it. They organize rallies, pride, pride rallies. But you, you don’t talk it, you are intolerant… But Allah, Exalted and Glorified be He, destroyed a nation for this act… Allah, Exalted and Glorified be He, made it clear that He destroyed [the people of Lut] because of this sin, this major sin.”

Mazin AbdulAdhim, a prominent Canadian Muslim scholar and Imam based in London, Ontario:

“I believe that homosexuality is absolutely not genetic in any way, shape, or form. It is entirely conceptual, period… The correct Islamic viewpoint is as follows: The *desire to procreate* is genetic, and procreation can only take place with the opposite gender, and therefore the default desire of a human being (the Fitrah) is to be attracted to and seek to have intercourse with the opposite gender… just like homosexuality can be caused by the environment, it can also be reversed… It is a sexual perversion, an illness of the desires, and it must be accepted as such… I believe that the correct angle to approach Muslims and non-Muslim who are struggling with this issue is to tell them that their desires can be changed.”^[6]

“In terms of morality, the West is absolutely a cesspool of corruption and depravity. The Zina [fornication, adultery], pornography, homosexuality, drinking, drugs, etc, are not only widespread, but they are completely and totally accepted as normal.”^[7]

“Islam defines rights and responsibilities for both genders, which offers us an objective foundation upon which to define the strengths and weaknesses and both males and females. This protects mankind from the oppression of people’s whims and desires, and from the misguidance of the leadership of the foolish. The bottom line: Men and women are not the same. Men and women are different, and each gender is good at something that the other is not. This makes men better tasked at certain things, and women better tasked at others. There is nothing wrong with saying these things. These are facts, and we should not be afraid of stating them openly, regardless of how much the Western liberal man-hating feminist snowflakes hate it.”^[8]

Dr. Jamal Badawi, a Canadian prominent Muslim scholar:

“To allow homosexuality in the name of liberalism and freedom is a kind of diversion from the innate or fitrah [فطرة] nature in which Almighty Allah created humankind. In terms of our perspectives as Muslims and in terms of the moral standards, this is a setback and decline in the world today.”^[9]

Syed Muhammad Rizvi, the Imam of the Islamic Shia Ithna Asheri Jamaat of Toronto and a prominent Shiite scholar and cleric in Canada wrote in his book “Marriage and Moral in Islam”:

“In the Islamic legal system, homosexuality is a punishable crime against the laws of God. In the case of homosexuality between two males, the active partner is to be lashed a hundred times if he is unmarried and killed if he is married, whereas the passive partner is to be killed regardless of his marital status. In the case of two females (i.e., lesbianism), the sinners are to be lashed a hundred times if they are married.”

Arif Jahangiri, then Secretary General, ICNA Canada (Islamic Circle of North America):

“Our children, their school curriculum was changed and introduced a chapter about different life styles and sexual orientation. We gave our right of making policy on education in the hands of those who are not capable of giving birth of a child even.”

Farrah Marfatia, Principal of Maingate Islamic Academy in Missisauga, Ontario authored a guide entitled “How To Talk To Your Muslim Child” which provided parents with advice and tools to cope with topics in the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Health Education Curriculum (2015) also known as the sex-ed curriculum. The 1st Edition of the guide was edited by Sheikh Zahir Bacchus, Sheikh Omar Subedar, Imam Belal Ahmad,Omar Zia, Bushra Tobah, and Rizwan Wadhera. The following are excerpts from Marfatia’s guide:

“The Prophet [Mohammad] ﷺ told us that homosexuals are cursed by Allah as are the men who imitate or dress up like women.”
“In Islam only a man can marry a woman and only a woman can marry a man–we are not allowed to marry people of the same gender. When people engage in same-sex relationships they go against the natural disposition (fitrah) of human beings and are unable to reproduce.”
“Being transgender is not permissible in Islam because choosing to imitate the opposite sex in movements and speech is not permissible in Islam.”
“All other members of the LGBTQ community make a choice to ‘feel’ that way despite the fact that Allah did not create them that way. This is why it is not permissible.”
“Sexual activity such as anal sex is not allowed for Muslims… it can lead to sicknesses… and is also displeasing to Allah.
“In the Quran, Allah shares a story of a people who did not follows His guidance… These people did not listen to Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) and did not want to follow Allah’s guidance so they were punished for their disobedience with a shower of stones.”

The Islamic Party of Ontario:

“The sexual relationship is only between men and women… Allah has created two genders: men and women. Any physical defect in any organ of a person doesn’t change one’s gender identification and sexual orientation. All the communities of all the faiths believe in it; modern science proves it. The concept of “gender identity” or “seven-colour gender” is a false concept.”^[10]

Street Dawah Toronto, a group of Muslim activists who spread the message of Islam at a portable Islamic booth called “Free Info on Islam” in downtown Toronto (Dundas Square), posted on Facebook:

“[T]he LGBTQ lifestyle goes against what Islam permits… The LGBTQ community believe that their choices are beautiful – to be shared and encouraged openly. We can agree to disagree, just as anyone has the ability to reason, and ultimately choose to agree or disagree with Islam… The Prophet Lut… did not remain silent or behind closed doors – he did not shy away, nor was he fearful in standing for what he believed to be from God…that which is beneficial, beautiful, True, and liberating.”^[11]

Al Haashim Atangana Kamena, a street preacher at Toronto’s Dundas Square:

“If you are gay you are cursed, because it is disgusting, because you are a man and you are having sex with another man which is the cause of AIDS… Homosexuality is wrong and a sin and if you are a homosexual you are cursed… when you die you will have to answer to God for your evil Satanic actions…”

Excerpts from the book Fatawa Islamiyah (Islamic Verdicts), Vol. 6, p. 199, (purchased at an Islamic book store in Scarborough, Ontario):

“The Ruling on Sodomy and the Punishment Thereof… the punishment for one who does that or allows it to be done to him is that he be killed. Or, to be burnt or to be stoned. Or, to be thrown from the highest point (mountain, tower, lofty building etc.), then to follow it with stoning…”

Excerpts from the book Minhaj-Al-Muslim by Abu Bakr Al-Jazairy (purchased at ICNA Canada bookstore in Toronto):

“The Hadd [fixed punishment] of homosexuality is stoning to death… The methods of killing them (the two who committed the homosexual act) that have been related from the Companions have differed. From among them there were those who burned them with fire. Others among them killed them by stoning them with stones. Ibn ‘Abbas said about them. “The highest building in the village should be sought, then they should be thrown from it upside down (i.e. on their heads). Then they should stoned after that.”

Excerpts from the book The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam by Yusuf Al Qaradawi (was sold at ISNA Canada bookstore):

“We must be aware that in regulating the sexual drive Islam has prohibited not only illicit sexual relations and all ways which lead to them, but also the sexual deviation known as sodomy. This perverted act is a reversal of the natural order, a corruption of man’s sexuality, and a crime against the rights of females… The jurists of Islam have held different opinions concerning the punishment for this abominable practice. Should it be the same as the punishment for zina [adultery, which means that the married sinner is stoned to death], or should both the active and passive participations [sic] be put to death? While such punishments may seem cruel, they have been suggested to maintain the purity of the Islamic society and to keep it clean of perverted elements.”

A textbook published by the Saudi Ministry of Education and taught at Islamic private school west of Toronto, warns students of homosexuality. This textbook depicts homosexuality as a “major sin”. The punishment for committing homosexual sexual relations is similar to that inflicted on the people of Lut, meaning by stoning and/or by fire. Homosexuality interferes with the natural state of human beings and spreads moral corruption and diseases like HIV.

The book “24 Hours With The Prophet”, which was distributed for free at the Islamic booth at Dundas Square in Toronto, considers homosexuality a “major sin.”

Excerpts from a newsletter (March & April 2015) published by Meadowvale Islamic Centre in Mississauga, Ontario:

“The Five Evils… 5. When men shall engage in sexual intercourse with men and women shall engage in sexual acts with other women, i.e. sodomy, homosexuality.”

Excerpts from the book Clear Your Doubts About Islam was distributed for free at the Islamic book at Toronto’s Dundas Square.

“In the West today, homosexuality and lesbianism have come to be seen as an alternative lifestyle subject to personal preference… Islam considers homosexuality to be the result of human choice… It is inconceivable that God would have made some people homosexuals then declared it a punishable crime… Inclinations can exist within humans toward a variety of natural acts and unnatural ones such as rape, paedophilia or bestiality.”

NCCM alleges – McVety believes that Islam strives for a “hostile takeover”

The statement issued by NCCM reads: “McVety also has reportedly stated, “Islam is not just a religion, it’s a political and cultural system as well and we know that Christians and Jews and Hindus don’t have the same mandate for a hostile takeover.”

NCCM’s Mustafa Farooq himself revealed his vision about future Islamic Canada

Here is an excerpt from Farooq’s Facebook post:^[12]

“In terms of civic disobedience, while definitely important, we have to look more closely at the civics. How are we Muslims going to recreate Cordoba^[13] [Caliphate/ Islamic State] in Edmonton/Toronto/Montreal/any Canadian city? We have a massive task ahead of us, but I really believe that it is one at which we can succeed, one in which we erase these artificial “nation-state” identities, and move together to pursue Jannah [paradise].”

It appears that Mustafa Farooq, the head of the leading Muslim lobby in Canada (NCCM), believes in gradual Islamization of Canada and erasing its “nation-state” identity.

Statements by Muslim imams, community leaders and groups on Islamization, radicalism

ICNA Canada shared on its website the book “Riyad us Saliheen” (“The Gardens of the Righteous” رياض الصالحين) compiled by Imam Zakaruya Yahya Bin Sharaf An-Nawawi, a Sunni Shafi’ite jurist and hadith scholar who lived in 13th century. The book and its modern commentary present the true teachings of Islam based on on the guidance of the Quran and Sunnah, the wisdom of the early generations of Muslims, and the heritage of Islamic scholarship.

Here are selected excerpts from the book that was also shared by other Islamic centres in Canada and the United States:^[14]

“Muslims will dominate the Jews” and kill them

“[Hadith] 1820. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah(PBUH) said, “The Last Hour will not come until the Muslims fight against the Jews, until a Jew will hide himself behind a stone or a tree, and the stone or the tree will say: `O Muslim, there is a Jew behind me. Come and kill him,’ but Al-Gharqad tree will not say so, for it is the tree of the Jews.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].”

“Commentary: Gharqad is a thorny plant which is well-known in the area of Palestine. Allah can bestow the power of speech to whatever thing He likes. When Allah wills, He will give mastery to the Muslims. He will help them even by means of plants and stones which will assist the Muslims against the Jews by informing them about the whereabouts of the Jews.”

“The Jews have predominance over the Muslims in spite of the fact that they are a minority. But according to this true narration, the situation will definitely change before the Day of Resurrection, and the Muslims will dominate the Jews. Allah is the Master and Rubb of everything.”

“Commentary. When a country or a region is regarded as Dar-ul-Islam (land of Islam), it is not necessary to migrate from it to some other place. It is, however, obligatory to emigrate from such regions which are Dar-ul-Kufr (land of infidels) and where it is difficult to adhere to Islamic injunctions. It is also evident from this Hadith that when it is not necessary to migrate from one Islamic country to another then it is also not permitted by the Shari`ah to leave an Islamic country to settle permanently in Dar-ul-Kufr only for the reason that the latter has plenty of wealth and social welfare. Unfortunately, Muslims today are afflicted with this disease. The transfer of their capital and talent to Dar-ul-Kufr is indeed very disturbing because on one side these two factors are lending support to the economy of Bilad-ul-Kufr (countries of infidels) and on the other, obscenity and indecency that are common in such countries, are becoming increasingly common among the Muslims too.

“Another highly important reason for the prohibition of migration of Muslims to Dar-ul-Kufr is that it goes against the spirit as well as their readiness for Jihad fi sabilillah (striving and fighting in the way of Allah). This spirit and readiness must be kept always alive so that the Muslims may respond at once to the call of Jihad whenever the need for it arises anywhere…

“Commentary: This Hadith brings out the following three points:

“l. The objective of Jihad. This objective warrants that one must struggle against Kufr (disbelief) and Shirk (polytheism) and the worship of falsehood in all its forms. Jihad has to continue until this objective is achieved. This contention is supported by a Hadith, to the effect that Jihad will continue till the Day of Resurrection.

“In this Hadith the word (An-Nas) translated above as “people” stands for the polytheists and idolaters. The reason being that other Nasus (pl. of Nass, meaning `text’) confirm the exemption of Ahl-ul-Kitab (people of the Scriptures) from it subject to the condition that they agree to pay Jizyah (dues imposed by Islam on the people of the Book living under the protection of an Islamic state) and submit to the Muslim rule. The Arab pagans have only the choice to either embrace Islam or face war. In the latter case, it is incumbent on the Mulsims to wage Jihad against them to wipe out Kufr and Shirk and raise the banner of Tauhid everywhere.

“This Hadith strongly refutes the people who distort the Islamic concept of Jihad and hold that Islam preaches defensive war only. It is an apologetic approach because defensive war has to be fought in any case by every nation and country. Thus, it is a compulsion and needs no justification.

“The real distinction of Islam lies in its enjoining Muslims to wage war for upholding the truth beside fighting for their own defense.

“The domination of Kufr, Shirk and falsehood is darkness, heresy and tyranny, and the objective of Islam is to purge the world of all these evils.

“It aims at liberating man from the worship of man, set them on the path of worship of Allah, and to provide a just and equitable society to mankind.

“Wherever in the world there is tyranny, ignorance and heresy, Muslims are bound to fight such evils and finish them by means of Jihad.

“There is also a third form of Jihad which is waged against countries where Muslims are victims of aggression, suppression and cruelties of the non-Muslims. It is incumbent upon Muslims to liberate their brethren in Faith from the clutches of the non-Muslims by means of Jihad.”

Imam Mohammad Iqbal Nadvi, the President of the Canadian Council of Imams and then the President of ICNA Canada said that “Jihad will continue until the Day of Resurrection.”^[15]

Shaikh Abdool Hamid, a resident scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, said (at Masjid Toronto Mosque):^[16]

“But ultimately, brothers and sisters, our goal as Muslims should be to transform, to move it along, not just to be satisfied when the situation as we find it and we try to fit in somehow. As I said that it may be necessary initially. But Islam came to transform the lives of people, to improve it for them. By change I don’t mean we want to take over for the sake of taking over. By change what I mean is to improve the lives of people. That’s why Islam came and that’s what it did at the time of the Prophet [Mohammad], peace and blessing be upon him. Of course in improving the life of people changes will have to be made, so it may seem from one perspective that Islam took over so to speak, but it’s did not take over to enslave people or to control them or to take advantage of them. It took over in order to enhance their lives. And so what happened in the time of Prophet [Mohammad], peace and blessing be upon him, and after he passed away and for many generations after that, Islam transformed societies and transform people. So as Muslims we should not simply especially when we interact or we deal with the Western world for also a practical level we live here, we have families here… So we should not be simply satisfied with the situation as it is with the status quo. We should try to change this, to bring about changes that will improve the lives of people… We should strive to change, not necessarily overnight. That’s the other thing. Our changes don’t have to happen overnight. Allah the Exalted did not overnight transform society. He did not prohibit X Y Z and ordered X Y Z or A B C overnight. Praise be to Allah, Allah the Exalted, the Wise, He revealed the Quran over a period of 23 years, 23 years, and it was over this period that slowly the concepts, the values and the principles of Islam were being established a little bit at a time in the lives of people, so that the change that overcame them, it did so slowly. So we don’t need to rush into making changes, but that doesn’t mean [that] we shouldn’t start working toward the change even if it comes out an old day story. So we should not be satisfied with what we find. Initially we’ll be trying to do the best we can and what we find, but then we should start planning, so that we can move this forward, Allah Willing… In this is testament to this, its transformation, the nature of the transformation of the message of Islam, that we should not be satisfied with the way things are unless of course they are prophets, but if they are not, and we should try to transcribe to positively contribute towards changing for the better even if it takes time, even if takes a long time, but Allah Willing, we’ll get there and that is what it is important, not to change overnight, but to have the plan and the intention to change and to start that process even if it is a slow one… So we take what we can do and we work with that, Allah Willing, slowly changes will come… What this ultimately will mean also, brothers and sisters, is that certain changes cannot happen unless we become involved in the political process… Be smart in showing others the message of Islam. So we need to engage even in that level if we really want to bring about the changes that we be not only for the betterment of the Muslims but Allah Willing for all of the society. There is nothing in Islam that is only good for Muslims and not good for the non-Muslims. Absolutely not. Whatever is good for the Muslims is also good for those who are not Muslims… Cause that what Allah wants for people. He wants the best in life and He [Allah] gives us this legislation [Islamic Law, Sahria] to allow us to achieve the best in life. So not only for the Muslims, but for the whole community in society as well. So we need to as Muslims to recognize this. We don’t have to submit to the situation as it is. Initially we might have to, but we should start thinking about how best we can bring about positive changes to our situation we face in our societies. That is what Islam is all about.”

Shaikh Abdool Hamid’s prayer at Masjid Toronto Mosque:^[17]

“O Allah! Raise the standing of Islam and the Muslims and humiliate the polytheism [identified by Muslim scholars also as Christianity], the infidels and the atheists, and give victory (help) to your slaves who believe in the oneness of Allah. O Allah! Give victory to our oppressed and deprived Muslim brothers and the mujahideen [those who engage in jihad] everywhere. O Allah! Pour on them patience and steadfast their feet and give them victory over the disbelieving people and give them victory over the evildoers and give them victory over the criminals.”

Abu Ameenah Bilal Philip:^[18]

“Prophet Jesus. Issa [Arabic name of Jesus], peace be upon him, represents the bond or the link between the three last versions of Islam. The third Islam being the true version. Christianity [is] a distortion, and Judaism [is] a distortion, though in its roots Judaism was Islam as in the roots of Christianity, as Jesus taught it, it was Islam. Jesus represents the link between all three. Twenty two states in the US out of their fifty two states, twenty two of them legally banned the Islamic Law (Sharia)… The Sharia is the law of God, the law of Allah which is good for all times, all people in all places. That is the reality. Wherever Muslims are able to apply it, it is their duty to apply it, not to force it upon people as a minority in a country of non Muslims. We have foolish Muslims, you know, calling for Sharia in the middle of Europe and creating the scare. We can’t apply it unless we are the majority and the majority agree, then we can apply it, if the majority don’t agree even we’re all Muslims, but the majority don’t agree to apply Sharia to try, to apply it is to unleash bloodshed in the Muslim nation [Ummah], because Muslims will fight you. They have to be educated. The Muslim nation [Ummah] has to come to that understanding that the way that we deserve to govern ourselves is in accordance with the Sharia [Islamic Law] and that’s what ‘there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, Mohammad is the messenger of Allah, peace and blessing of Allah be upon him’ (لا إله إلا الله ومحمد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم) means. This is what it means.”

Mazin AbdulAdhim, a prominent Canadian Muslim scholar and Imam based in London, Ontario:

“[W]herever we are in the world our loyalty is back to the central concept of one one ‘Ummah‘ (Muslim nation). Our loyalty is to the ‘Khilafah‘ (Caliphate or Islamic State) if it exists and to the ‘Khilafah‘ (Caliphate or Islamic State) if it doesn’t exist. Our vision of what the ‘Khilafah‘ (Caliphate or Islamic State) is and what we are working towards remains and it’s going to be re-established ‘inshallah’ [Allah Willing] ,and our loyalty must remain with it whether it’s present or absent, because this is only thing we are allowed to have loyalty towards, the full implementation of Islam.”^[19]

“So this is the problem that without a Khilafah [Caliphate, Islamic State] Islam cannot be implemented and individually are obligated to give a baya [allegiance] to a Khalifah [Caliph, head of the Islamic State]… So it is required for us to give a baya [allegiance] to a Khalifah [Caliph, head of the Islamic State], but since there is no Khilafah [Caliphate] you can’t have a Khalifah [Caliph] therefore it is fard [obligatory] upon us to re-establish the Khilafah [Caliphate] so we can give a baya [allegiance] to a Khalifah [Caliph]… And that’s why it is a call not only to the brothers here, not only to the brothers who are watching online, everybody who has any capacity of spreading this word all the way to the armies of the Muslims, our brothers and sisters. This word has to reach them. They have to understand that this is the only way forward. It’s the only way to achieve the nasr [support] of Allah ‘Azza wa Jalla [Owner of Greatness and Reverence] is to support this dean [religion] and this call to Khilafah [Caliphate]. And that’s what I want to do. I want to present to you the alternative view, the view that says that voting in a secular democratic system, in a system that will not implement Islam, that does not implement Islam, to vote for anybody to become a legislator in such a system it is something that Islam forbids and I want to present the evidence for this… What our identity is? We are Muslims, strewn about all across the planet without anybody who represents us. We are Muslims who are actually belong to the Khilafah [Caliphate]. The Khilafah [Caliphate] represents us and it was destroyed in 1924. We are responsible for working to re-establish it. So this is the first thing. We must work to establish the Khilafah [Caliphate].”^[20]

“Islam and democracy are contradictory and absolutely incompatible, because Islam forbids mankind from legislating laws in the place of the Creator, even if the overwhelming majority of the people vote in favor of it… The Khilafah [Islamic State – Caliphate] system is the system of government designed by Allah (swt), and no amount misuse of it by bloodthirsty militias will change that fact. We should call for it, and work toward re-establishing it – and its return is a promise from Allah (swt) and His Messenger (saw).”^[21]

Imam Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick, Director at the Canadian Council of Imams:

“If Allah Willing there is a Caliph [Leader of the Islamic State] who arises then we would be obligated to go to that area and may Allah raise that Caliph up. “If Allah Willing there is a Khalifa [Caliph, rulers of the Islamic State, Caliphate] who arises then we would be obligated to go to that area. May Allah raise this Khalifa up.”^[22]

“We can say, Praise to God, [that] we are coming out of it [the crisis] now, we actually on our way back up, you can see what happened in Tunisia, Tahrir Square, in many places around the Muslim world now people are waking up, and we are on our way up, God Willing, to the original thing which, God Willing, will be Caliphate that follows the guidance of Prophet-hood (خلافة على منهاج النبوة) to return to the proper Islam and Prophet-hood (نبوة)… The bottom line for Muslims today is really to revive Islam, and it’s so important to us to get the message across to the Canadian people, to the people of this land, because only when the people of the land themselves understood the message historically and the message was able to flourish in this land, so our masjids [mosques] to great extent, I’m not necessarily know the situation here. Many of our masjids [mosques] were just built to protect us, to keep our Islam, now we have to share the good aspects of Islam with the public, so the people of the soil itself accept Islam and then, God Willing, you will see a different relationship with the country itself. Many of our young people are also growing up, children of the soil of the land itself as well, and so it is really that revival of Islam need to be positive, you know, and to go forward. It may appear negative in some ways, but this is the process we are going through. It’s a storming process, it’s like a giant who is sleeping and he wakes up. The first few minutes he is a little bit crock, he is not sure which way to go, but now he’s starting to wake up and that’s really what the Ummah [Islamic Nation] is now waking up, and God Willing sooner you will see the result coming through.”^[23]

O Allah, help the mujahideen [those who are engaged in jihad] everywhere, and especially in Palestine, Egypt, Tunisia [اللهم انصر المجاهدين في كل مكان خصوصا في فلسطين ومصر وتونس].”^[24]

“Al Hamdulillah, we’re back in Córdoba, Spain. May Almighty Allah one day enable Spanish people to return to Islam in crowds!”^[25]

Imam Said Rageah (Toronto):^[26]

“There would be a war [between Muslims and Christians] … the third group would be victorious. They will win over the enemy [Christians]… and then the Muslims will go again to Constantinople, which is known as Istanbul today… Muslims will conquer that land without a fight. First time we did was with a fight. We fought them we won over them, but this time without a fight. Rome same thing. We’ll go to Rome. We will not fight. The Muslim believers will pray Allah Akbar [Allah is the greatest] and thenthey will be victorious. Allah will them the victory over the enemy [Christians].”

Syed Hassan Mujtaba Rizvi (Toronto):

“We will stand as we stood today, as we will stand in the future, for any insult that comes to the Prophet and you should know this, that this is going to continue. It will not stop, and God is our witness, we will see the day when religion of Allah will overpower all of these oppressors and justice and peace will rule the world.”^[27]

“My affiliations are with Iran, because my affiliation with Canada would mean that if in Canada there was something for me to affiliate by, that was given to me by Allah, I should have affiliation with Canada. But when I look towards Allah, and I see that He has affiliation with Iran, has no affiliation with Canada with America, I say: I have affiliation with Iran.”^[28]

Abdullah Obeid, the Imam Ali Masjid in Ottawa:^[29]

“Allah willing, you gonna see that our word [Islam] is going to be all over the world. This is the word of Zaynab [the daughter of Caliph Ali and sister of Hussein, the grandson of Mohammad]. Today, we march in the streets of Montreal in Christmas, in Day of Muharram, to say that our beloved Imam Mahdi, the grandson of Mohammad, peace and blessings be upon him, from this agony, from this suffering, from this pain in the chest, from this mourning, our Imam is gonna rise and is going to call Jesus to come and rise to stand up to justice. All people, Canadians and all people around the world are going to say: O the one of follows the path of the family of Mohammad [يا قائم آل محمد meaning, they will accept his authority and Islam]. Two months ago you had a problem with N1H1 [swine flu] and everybody was afraid. I tell you this, and listen carefully. I heard that my visiting Imam Hussein Ziarat Ashura [a salutatory prayer to Husayn ibn Ali and the martyrs of the Battle of Karbala], it is a special visit called Ziarat Ashura and if you recite that ten times Imam Hussein will protect everybody, not only the Muslims. Listen to this carefully. I told the brothers in our centre: Let’s recite Ziarat al-Imam Hussein [Ziarat Ashura] Hussein will keep everybody healing in their hearts. We recited that Ziarat [Ashura]. Where is N1H1 today? It’s gone. You know why? Because those people, they prayed for all the people of Canada, Montreal and the world. Where there is Hussein there is life. Where there is Hussein there is justice. Where there is Hussein there is Islam and where is Islam there is peace and love within all the nations. We say finally to true Canadians it is not a happy Christmas today, it is a sad Christmas today, because at the same day Imam Hussein died to rise and say I’m the real inheritor of Jesus, Moses and Mohammad.”

Prayers at Masjid Toronto Mosque:^[30]

You are our Protector and give us victory over the disbelieving people. [congregation:] Ameen [declaration of affirmation]…

O Allah! Give victory to Islam and raise the standing of the Muslims. [congregation:] Ameen.

O Allah! Seize them with the seizure of One Mighty, Omnipotent [referring to a Quranic verse that deals with the punishment Allah inflicted on Pharaoh and his people] [congregation:] Ameen

You are our Protector and give us victory over the disbelieving people.

O Allah, give victory to Islam and raise the standing of the Muslims. [congregation:] Ameen.

O Allah, whoever wishes good for Islam and the Muslims bestow all goodness upon him

O Allah, whoever wishes ill for us and wishes ill for Islam and the Muslims, make his plot (tied) around his neck. [congregation:] Ameen.

O Allah, turn fate against them, [congregation:] Ameen, and destroy/ annihilate them as You destroyed/ annihilated [the peoples] of ʿĀd and Thamud [ancient peoples annihilated by Allah because they didn’t heed the warnings of the prophets]. [congregation:] Ameen.

Imam Syed Soharwardy of Calgary, the head of the Calgary-based Islamic Supreme Council of Canada and the founder of Muslims Against Terrorism, said in a testimony in front of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence:^[31]

“Basically they are U.S. organizations that are operating in Canada. One is called AlMaghrib Institute, the other is called AlKauthar Institute. Both work in universities, not in mosques. Both give lectures. Both organize seminars. They are the ones who brainwash these young kids in lectures. Their topic is very normal: We’re going to talk about the life of Prophet Muhammad. We’re going to talk about how to live in a non-Muslim society. When you look on the surface, the topics are very normal No one has a problem. But when you develop an association with them – not everybody develops a long-term relationship, only a few — then the brainwashing begins. The shoe bomber in the United States attended AlMaghrib Institute lectures. These people are given a very free hand in our universities and colleges. They are organizing lectures and seminars, but nobody will put a sign up that says “I am recruiting for al Qaeda or ISIL or ISIS.” Nobody will come because they know they will be caught. It is happening, and I know 150 Canadians were fighting for ISIL there. Eighty have come back. This is a serious issue. Three young boys from my city were killed fighting for ISIL. I know one of them; he lived in my neighbourhood. That boy was raised in front of me. So, again, it is the ideology of intolerance. My dear brothers and sisters, they don’t have intolerance towards Christians and Jews; they have intolerance towards Muslims, and that is because of disagreement. The Wahhabi Salafi ideology does not accept any difference of opinion. I have been called infidel. I have been called kafir. I have been called innovator. I have been called deviant imam. The reason is because I disagree with the Wahhabi Salafi ideology on many levels. I am a proud Canadian. I love this country, so I’m supporting an infidel government.

Shaykh Faisal Abdur-Razak, the President of the Islamic Forum of Canada and Vice-President of the Islamic Council of Imams of Canada in Brampton, Ontario warned about the dangers of the Islamic Salafi ideology and its increasing negative effects on the Canadian Muslim community. The Salafi ideology, in Abdur-Razak’s words, is “extreme”, “like a poison”, “indoctrination, like a brainwashing” and those who espouse it are “misguided”, “very aggressive” and “sometimes they can be violent”.

According to Abdur-Razak, the Canadian Salafi Imams and their followers cause “’fitna [sedition], disunity, problems, conflicts in mosques” and spread “hatred” in the Muslim community. He urged Canadian Muslims to be fully aware of the menace of the Salafis and to avoid any association with them.

Here are excerpts from Abdur-Razak’s sermons^[32]:

The Salafis are “like a disease in the Muslim community”

“I go to Guyana or to Trinidad I hear complaints all the time, hear complaints all the time from Imams of behavior of members of this group. Now, a lot of these young Muslims, they think they’re doing what is right. They think they want to to do something for Islam, but they are mislead, misguided by this ideology, the Salafi ideology, this extreme ideology.”

“Here in Canada, in America, in England the same thing, the UK and so many countries, so many countries, it continues to happen. This group is almost like a disease in the Muslim community, destroying the Muslim community from within. That you need to be mindful of…”

“This extremism, that’s really shameful that Muslims behave like this, but this is the way of this particular group the Salafi group. I usually don’t mention names of any group, you know that, but because of the gravity of the sinful act they committed they need to be exposed, that you can protect yourself from them, that you stop associating yourselves with Salafis, you stop going to masjids [mosques] where there’re Salafi Imams, keep away from that, protect yourself from this, protect your family, protect your children, because their ideas are like a poison.”

“Once it gets to you it is difficult to remove it, it is difficult to remove it. And we’ve seen it time and time again children disobeying their parents, disrespecting their parents, not listening to their parents, because they are members of this group , they do what the group tell them to do. It is almost like indoctrination, like a brainwashing that goes on. May Allah Glorified and Exalted be He, protect us, God Willing.

“It’s happening here in Canada, they’re imposing their beliefs on everyone”

“After the Khutba [sermon] yesterday several brothers came to me and they were saying that they experience that in their own families, in their own families, of either their son or their nephew or someone who is influenced by this group, and that person, that boy, whether they are teenage or young adult, they stop showing any respect for their parents, very disrespectful, very arrogant the way they behave and condemning people bidaa [unlawful religious innovation], bidaa, shirk [practicing idolatry or polytheism] and so on, anything that they don’t like, they keep doing this.”

“I mentioned a point of, I went to many countries to give lectures and one of the common, one of the most frequent complaints of people like Imams in different masjids [mosques] and so on, complaints about this group the Salafi group, the Salafi group…”

“On Eid day [Eid al-Fitr] right here in this masjid, there is a family who came to me almost crying, the mother, the daughters, they complain about their son. He used to come here. [He] stopped coming. He got mixed up with this group, this extreme group. Sometime in Ramadan he just wrote them a note, said I’m going. He’s gone for more than a month. No contact with them, gone with the group. They don’t know how to contact him, he’s not contacting them, they thought he’d come back for Eid [Eid al-Fitr], the night before Eid he’d come back to be with his parents and so on. [He] never showed up . The extremist attitude that this group indoctrinates people with. I want to let you know of this because it will get worse if we don’t protect ourselves from this group, the Salafi group. They’re destroying graves and masjids [mosques] in Libya, they’ve attempted the same thing in Egypt. In Somalia they’ve done so much, the same group, and so on. It’s happening here as well. It’s happening here in Canada, of them imposing their beliefs on everyone. They’re very aggressive. Sometimes they can be violent as we have seen there [in Libya]. People died.”

“This is the Salafi Daawa [call to Islam], it destroys you”

“I don’t usually mention names in my Khutba [sermon], but I have to mention it today. That I can at least, those of you, who are here if you belong to any Salafi group, get rid of them, protect your Islam by removing yourself from any involvement in any Salafi group. The worst threat that the Muslim Ummah [nation] is facing today is the Salafis . Not the non-Muslims, the Salafis. The worst threats that they are faced with are the Salafis. One of our families on Eid day, they probably here, yes they are here. They came to me, the mother, the sister, crying, one of their sons, he just left them a note: I’m gone. [He] left them a note, left the home, I’m gone, because he is with this extreme group, no respect for his parents. This is in Ramadan he did it, on Eid day [Eid al-Fitr] they thought he would come back, at least it’s Eid to be with his parents and his family. No. This is what it does to you, destroys you. This is the Salafi Daawa [call to Islam]. It destroys you. It has nothing to do with the Islam and the Prophet peace be upon him…”

Some Salafis after graduating Islamic university of Madina [Saudi Arabia] return to Canada to spread hatred

“Within Canada, even in Canada and in other countries, the same complaints I receive. This particular group, members of the Salafi group causing ‘fitna’ [sedition], disunity, problems, conflicts in ‘masjids’ [mosques]…”

“Some of them go to study at Islamic university of Madina [Saudi Arabia], and then they come back and they start condemning everything, criticizing everything and causing hatred and disunity in our community.”

“Leave the Salafi group, protect yourself from that danger”

If you have good words to say, if you are guided by Allah and by the Prophet, peace be upon him, your efforts will lead to goodness, your efforts will lead to harmony, your efforts will lead to people living a happy life, it wouldn’t bring disunity and finta [sedition] and confusion in a Muslim community. This is what the Salafi group is doing.”

“And so I appeal to those of you who belong to the Salafi group, maybe because of you’re loyal to Islam, you want to do what is right. You want to follow Koran and Sunnah, go back to the Sunni way, leave the Salafi group, protect yourself from that danger, go back to the Sunni way, the way of the prophet peace be upon him.”

“Jihad is… an honorable ‘struggle’ and resistance against oppressors and those who oppose the peaceful spread of Allah’s Word and faith in Him and His religion of Islam… Islam prohibits this ‘war’ and allows for Jihad in the three situations, namely: 1) Defense of Life, Property and National Boundaries, without transgression… 2) Removing oppression and championing the just rights of the oppressed people… 3) Defense of Faith and Religion… A ‘Mujahid’ (Muslim fighter for the cause of Allah)… has a clear understanding that Jihad is only for just reasons: to protect Islam and the Muslims, and to spread the message of Islam and Word of Allah. If the enemies of Islam who are fighting the Muslims cease their attack, and accept terms for a just peace, the Muslim fighters are commanded to cease hostilities… The non-Muslim residents of an Islamic state are required to pay a minimal tax called ‘Jizyah’ which is specific type of head-tax collected from individuals who do not accept Islam and desire to keep their religion while living in an Islamic state and under Islamic rule…”

Charles McVety, President of the Canada Christian College, Has Expressed Islamophobic Views Inconsistent with Ontario’s Human Rights Code

(Toronto — October 26, 2020)

NCCM is deeply concerned by Premier Ford’s decision to transform the Canada Christian College into a university. The President of the College, Charles McVety, has expressed deeply Islamophobic views inconsistent with the Ontario’s Human Rights Code.

In 2010 Christian broadcaster Christian Television Service removed McVety’s show, Word TV, after Canada’s broadcast industry watchdog ruled that various statements by McVety violated its broadcast codes. A complainant to Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) identified fourteen programs between July 19, 2009 and February 21, 2010 that disparagingly treated topics around Muslims and other minority groups. McVety also has reportedly stated, “Islam is not just a religion, it’s a political and cultural system as well and we know that Christians and Jews and Hindus don’t have the same mandate for a hostile takeover.”

“We want to be clear: Christians, Muslims, Jews, those of other faiths, and those who ascribe to no faith tradition make Ontario a beautiful place to live in together,” said Mustafa Farooq, CEO of NCCM. “McVety has made it clear that he has no problem believing and expressing hateful views against Muslim Canadians. While we strongly believe in academic freedom, we firmly believe that McVety’s school should be held to the same standards and processes as everyone else. Furthermore, we ask that Premier Ford distance himself from an individual who has entrenched his reputation as a bigot.”
